Year 3 Welcome Newsletter

Welcome back to a new term!! Now that your child is in Year 3, they will have a fun, but challenging year ahead of them. The children have settled back to the new term well and have already risen to the challenges that being in Key Stage 2 raises. We have got an exciting term planned and this letter is to give you and your child an idea of the topics we will be covering this term in Year 3.

Maths

We shall be starting with place value and number and then building our skills in addition, subtraction and multiplication.

English

Our English this term will be closely linked to our topic work. Children will be given the opportunity to write in a variety of different text types and for different audiences, including writing Stone Age diaries and Estate Agent adverts.

Science

Our topics this term link nicely with our Stone Age topic; Rocks and Soils and then Forces.

Music

During this term, all children will begin to learn a variety of instruments with Lucy. We will also develop our music appreciation saying what we do and do not like about pieces using the correct music terminology.

Art/Design Technology

Art work will be linked to the main topics and we will be concentrating on developing drawing and sculpture skills.

P.E.

Children will be developing their skills in PE. Children should wear the correct P.E kit to school every Wednesday.

Computing (ICT)

Over the term we will be learning how to keep ourselves safe online and develop our computing skills to include coding.

Modern Foreign Languages

The children will begin their journey in learning Spanish. We shall learn about the country and where Spanish is spoken in the world.

Geography

We shall be looking at earthquakes and other natural disasters in the World, understanding how they happen and the effect they can have.

Religious Education

We will be encouraging the children to think about why some people believe that God exists and what does it mean to be a Christian today.

History

Life in the Stone Age through to the Iron Age is our main history topic this term.

Reading

Your child will bring home a reading folder every evening. Reading at home is the most important work that your child should do at home. It is important that they read independently as well as to adults. Please listen to your child as much as possible, even if it is only for five minutes. Reading journals should be signed each week to record both independent and shared reading.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Children should not be at school when unwell (whether symptoms are COVID 19 related or not) not). Please make sure you are following the latest Government advice

Please do not send in bags from home. Your child will need to come to school every Wednesday in their PE Kit (tracksuit bottoms would be advisable as the weather is getting colder). They will wear this all day and it should be washed before the following week.

Please make sure that your child has a coat in school every day. We shall be using the outdoors as much as possible even when it gets colder.

It is essential that we work together, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards
